NEW HURUNUI BRIDGE

Foundations Nearly Completed The sinking of the foundations for the new 1600 ft Hurunui bridge was almost completed and construction of the bridge should start within a month, said Mr A. M. Peart, resident engineer in Christchurch of the Ministry of Works, yesterday. Forty-five foundations had to be sunk to take the piers and superstructure of the bridge, said Mr Peart. The caisson method, where steel cylinders were sunk into the river-bed, the earth excavated up through them and then backfilling done with concrete, had been used for the foundations. Mr Peart said that the approaches to the bridge would be done by the Ministry of Works after all the major construction work was completed. .
