LIMES HOSPITAL CLOSURE

Accommodating Extra Patients

“With the other private surgical hospitals apparently stretched near capacity, the closure of The Limes private hospital will obviousy mean a greater pressure on the pubic hospital system,” the secretary of the North Canterbury Hospital Board (Mr J. G. Laurenson) said yesterday. ‘‘This will be most unfortunate, as we already have more patients crowded in than is desirable. It makes it all the more urgent that we should be given authority to complete Princess Margaret Hospital as early as possible.” Mr D. R. Smith, an executive member of the Private Hospitals’ Association, said the demand for private hospital treatment was ‘‘fairly great,” and the closing of The Limes with its 18 beds, mainly surgical, would aggravate the position. The two private surgical hospitals (Calvary and St. George’s) would “just have to try to fit in more surgical cases,” but this would be difficult as they were already heavily committed.
