MINOR FIRES
Four fire brigade units were called to the chemical works of Kempthorne, Prosser and Company, Ltd., Main South road; Hornby, yesterday, when separate outbreaks of fire were reported within a few hours. The first call was at 10.35 a.m. to a fire in the boilerhouse caused by a spark igniting a quantity of sulphur. Only slight damage was caused, and the fire was quickly extinguished by units from the Central and Sockburn stations. The second call was received at 3.15 p.m. and again units from Central and Sockbum attended. The fire was a minor one in the main sulphuric acid plant. Only slight damage was done and the firemen experienced more difficulty with fumes from the fire than they did with the actual fire. One of the units which attended the second fire remained for some time after the fire had been extinguished in case there was a further outbreak.
No damage was caused by a chimney fire at St. Bede’s College at 8 a.m. yesterday. One engine from the St. Albans station answered the call.
