STATEHOUSE RATES
Request For Continuity tUZ. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct. 6. The Dominion executive of the National Party at a meeting in Wellington today de; cided to ask the Government to require the State Advances Corporation to pay Jocal body rates on State houses from the day of first occupancy. The executive, in a supplied report, said that, at present, local body rates are paid on State houses only while they are occupied, and deductions from rates have to be made for all periods, i however short, that the houses are temporarily vacant.
Mr C. F. Jacobs (Te Awamutu) said local bodies were put to a lot of trouble, apart from any question of equity, making minute fractional deductions from rates for periods of vacancy as short as one or two days between lettings.
“Often a local body officer has to spend up to a couple of days working out deductions of 2d to 4d in rates payable on State houses,” he said.
Other speakers took the view that there was no reason why State houses should be treated in any special way in regard to rating Rates were paid on all nonState house properties whether they were occupied or not
