UNIVERSITY RECITAL

Church Music Group

The University Church Music Group, conducted by Mr H. N. Hindley, sang a very pleasing programme in the University Hall yesterday afternoon.

A group of six singers first performed "Praise God in His Holiness,” by Robert Whyte, with attractive tone, good balance and well-shaped phrasing. Byrd’s “Justorum Animae” created an exquisitely beautiful atmosphere of consoling resignation. Both works were sung with sensitivity.

Then the whole group sang Byrd’s “Four-part Mass.” The vocal timbres were skilfully suited to the character of the music and the individual contrapuntal strands were clearly heard and, were woven together into lovely patterns of sound with a poised sensibility. The words were admirably clear—ln a hall whose acoustics do not help audibility. Every phrase was sung with full appreciation of its moaning, and there was an attractive flexibility of rhythm.

There is a timeless peace to sixteenth century music, and the break this recital gave in the bustle at toe day was rewardingly refreshing. . —-C.F.B
