ASSISTANT BISHOP

Archdeacon McKenzie ■ (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 3. The appointment of the Ven. G.M. McKenzie, Archdeacon of the Wairarapa, at Assistant Bishop of Wellington was announced today by the Bishop of Wellington (the Rt. Rev. H. W. Baines). Archdeacon McKenzie was educated at College House (now Christchurch College) and graduated B.A. in 1929 He was ordained in 1931, and after a curacy at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Wellington, went to Taihape as vicar in 1934. During 1935-36 he was chaplain and headmaster of the Cathedral Grammar School, Christchurch. 'He returned to a curacy at St. Paul’s, Wellington, in 1937, and in 1938 went to bis present appointment as vicar of Kelburn. He served as a chaplain with the Royal New Zealand Navy from 1940 to 1946. and was awarded the V.R.D. in 1940 and the 0.8. E. in 1956 In 1947 he was appointed examining chaplain to the Bishop of Wellington, and in 1951 was made an honorary canon of St Paul’s Cathedral. In the same year he was appointed Archdeacon of the Wairarapa, while still remaining at Kelburn.
