Buying Older Houses

Sir,—Even if the Government does not extend the family benefit capitalisation scheme to older houses by its present legislation, all lb will do is make these and all prices skyrocket, even -rates. The reason the Nationalists got in power .was the promise to reduce taxation. It has increased postal and electrical charges and interest rates, it will no doubt help the owners of some of these old shacks to get fid of them. They say there are 1900-odd empty houses. Some are not even fit for cows. Labour was condemned for the vicious beer, cigarette and petrol taxes, but the Government has not reduced one item. There has been no reduction at all except on death duties—Yours, etc., T. H. BITMEAD. October 2, 1961.
