Sir,—l was shocked to read on the farm and station page the diabolical cruelty that is going on in New Zealand, which is a disgrace in the eyes of the world. The law provides for the merciful destruction of fattn animals. Yet the defenceless wild ones are not supposed to feel. Not only the poor opossums are tortured in many cases with a lingering death, but lovely wild birde will be no more. Why do these exterminators seek no merciful
means ot destruction? In parte of Australia 'where sheep feed on subterranean clover 75 per cent, of the ewes become sterile. Why cannot scientists find out something that would cause sterility in other animate?— Yours, etc., DOWN WITH CRUELTY. Ataahua, September 30, 196 L
