SCENTED GARDEN

Provision For Blind Planned

Fern wood Hostel for the Blind in Bristol street Will have a scented garden. The Soroptimist Club of Christchurch raised funds to provide it. Mr G. F. C. Ashdowne, manager of the New Zealand Foundation for the Blind in Christchurch, told the club yesterday that he wanted the garden to be provided so residents would be able to walk round it and get the fuU benefit of the scented flowers without having to bend down. Fragrant gardens in homes for the blind were built that way in overseas countries, he said. “We don’t want to build up scented flower beds on stark concrete, and wood is not durable. We want stones and hope to get them from demolished buildings,” he added. ‘To buy the stones would be too costly.” The hostel stood in about four acres of ground, which still were being laid out, But more plants were needed, he

said. “Femwood, which was opened in April, 1960, has developed into a real home. Each resident is a member of the hostel family. I don’t think we have had a word of complaint from a resident since we opened the hostel.” Mr Ashdowne gave a brief outline of the vast work being done by the foundation for the blind and partially blind of all ages throughout New Zealand.
