A device that takes the tedium out of rail ballastlaying has been tried successfully by the Railways Department, to Canterbury. Previously, gangs used jacks to raise the tracks and get shingle under the deepen. The device, known as a “Areg,” is ptaced under the sleepers and towed behind a train wtjup to three miles an hour Forced upward, the Sleepers dtoccnd oa to the shingle. To raise the track higher, hopper waggons are run over the line, dumping new shingle to front of the drag. The drag was explained yesterday by the district engineer of the Railways Department (Mr G. Shrimpton). Mr Shrimpton said it was used extensively overseas.
