Stolen Liquor “Flowed Freely” At Party

NAPIER, October 2. Liquor flowed freely at an all-night Tangoio party on September 23, after it had been stolen from Dalgety and Company, Ltd.'s warehouse, at Ahuriri, Detective SeniorSergeant A. Reid said in the Napier Magistrate’s Court today, However, the party had its aftermath when five of toe 40 who had attended were later arrested by Napier detectives, he said. The five men pleaded guilty to a series of charges before Mr W,< A. Hatlow, S.M., and were convicted on all counts and remanded in custody for sentence next Monday.

Those charged were Anzac Tauhau Wilson, agsd 25, a workman, of Hastings; Tarens Wlata Anderson, aged 25, a shearer, of Hastings; Samuel Robert Kurupo, aged 23, a workman, of Hastings; Howard Puna Spooner, aged 33, , a scrub-cutter, of Tangoio; and John Paul Sutlers, aged 24, a workman, of Hastings.

Anderson and Wilson were charged with breaking and entering the shop of I. W. Bailey, at Bay View, and committing theft, and with breaking into Dalgety and Company Ltd.'s warehouse and committing theft. Anderson was also charged with stealing a car battery. Eutiera, Spooner, and Kurupo

were each charged with recelvlng stolen liquor, knowing it to have been dishonestly obtained. Anderson and Wilson broke into the Bay View store on the night of Sep. tember 20-21. said Detective Reid. While Wilson revved a car engine. Anderson smashed through a glass door panel to break in.

From the shop, they stole cigarettes, tobacco, fireworks, and groceries of a total value of £B5 4s lid. Part of this haul, stored in biscuit tins, was found in the front garden of a house in Karamu road, Hastings. On September 23, Anderson and Wilson left a party in Spooner’s car. They went to Ahuriri, and broke into Dalgety’s warehouse, stealing liquor and shearing equipment valued at £338 17s. The liquor Ineluded beer, whisky, gin, brandy, vodka, rum. sherry and wine. “The liquor was taken to a party at Spooner's old homestead at Tangoio," said Detective Reid. "It flowed very freely. About 40 persons are said to have attended the party, which continued through the next day.”
