Search For Salan Intensified
(N .Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) PARIS, September 30. President de Gaulle has given orders for the capture of the former General Raoul Salan, “dead or alive,” it was reported in Paris vesterday.
The French Minister for Algeria (Mr Louis Joxe) arrived in Algiers from Paris yesterday with orders to intensify the hunt for Salan and his fellow-conspirators, the reports said. He has been told to instruct the police in Algers: “Get Salan, dead or alive,” the reports said.
Salan was sentenced to death in his absence for his part in the abortive Algerian coup last April. Mr Joxe's mission begins amid fears of a new attempt by Salan and his Secret Army Organisation followers to seize power and declare Algeria an "independent French republic.” Men from the special riot squad police force and the national gendarmes two bodies with unswerving loyalty to the Government, and the Republic—will be sent to Algeria to help in the search.
It is thought that if Salan and his men decide to strike, they will wait for a new incident, perhaps provoked by the speech General
de Gaulle is due to make on Monday night. The special powers President de Gaulle assumed on April 22 after Salan's military putsch in Algeria expired today. He made very restricted use of these powers, and used them to ensure speedy legal procedure against the revolt leaders. >
In Philippevile, eastern Algeria, French security forces yesterday killed four Moslems and wounded 13 after Moslem demonstrators fired at an Army platoon, French military sources said.
