Air Pollution
Sir,—Professor H. M. Carey, of Auckland, discussing cancer in women stated that filters on cigarettes were completely useless in preventing cancer-producing chemicals from reaching the lungs. He is quoted as saying: “Even although I do not smoke I am not immune to lung cancer, for that same chemical in tobacco is also present in air pollution where there is a large amount of coal used id industry.” In spite of the repeated statements from medical men, including New Zealand specialists, industrial smoke continues to be tolerated as a cancer hazard, particularly for those in close vicinity to the offenders.
