Police Beat Newspapers

The All Black, Dems Ybung, who had been “arrested in Wellington,” arrived in a Black Maria accompanied by two policemen just in time to referee the annual Police - Combined Newspapers charity Rugby match at the Show Grounds yesterday. Young was “set free" on the condition that he Would favour the Police team but penalised the Police from the kick-off. In a closely-fought match, Police beat Combined Newspapers by 14 points to 10. Tries for the Police were scored by E. Clark (2), A. Stokes and G. Raich. J. White kicked one conversion. For Combined Newspapers W. Spicer and B. Powell scored tries. Powell converted both. Proceeds amounted to about £3OO and will be divided equally between the Intellectualy Handicapped Child ren’s Parents’ Association and the Cerebral Palsy Welfare Association. -A march past of performers opened an afternoon of varied entertainment. Three girls' marching teams gave displays and girls from Buckett’s Gymnasium rode trick cycles and performed tumbling acts. Two police dogs, Ace and Buck gave an obedience display. A “musical ride” by 'members of the Christchurch Pony Club was popular with the large crowd. An 'exhibition of archery was_gjven by members of the Christchurch Archery Club. Suspended from the jib of a crane about 20 feet abovs a truck, Mr Robert de Ceny escaped from a strait-jacket iii 20 seconds.

The band of the Ist Battalion, Christchurch Regiment, and the Christchurch Ladies’ Highland Pipe Band provided the music.
