COLTS WIN, 4-0

Schools Beaten In Good Game As a curtain-raiser to the Challenge Shield match a Canterbury Colts team played a secondary schools’ representative team and won. 4-0. The colts were players of greater maturity from higher grades, and their speed of movement and to the ball were greater than that, to which the secondary school players were accustomed. The latter experienced great, difficulty in outpacing the cnlts’ defence, and were often forced into hurried passing which upset their usual accuracy and spoiled their pattern of play. The colts were obviously the better team, but the schoolboys did well enough in the circumstances, and some of the players showed considerable promise. In fact there was more constructive play in this game than in the Shield match. For the secondary schools L. Williams made some excellent saves in goal, and W. Dunn and C. Ineson played very well in the backs. Apart from a tendency to delay the delivery of their passes both S. Maister and K. Carpenter showed great promise as halves, their stickwork being most creditable. T. Burrows, at centre-forward, led his line with skill and determination and foiled effectively throughout ' the match. A. Patterson, at centre-half for the colts, gave his forwards splendid service, and they responded well. G. Gourlay showed good stickwork on the right wing and made some accurate centre passes, and B. Monk and C. Broadhurst were always a threats in the’circle play. L. Smith and D. Anthony combined well at times on the left flank, and their stickwork always troubled their young opponents. The latter did well enough in the first half, but the colts were usually in the ascendancy after the interval. • Tne umpires were Messrs N. Hocking and B. Rogers.
