Minor Associations NORTH ISLAND BEATS SOUTH ISLAND, 3-2

WANGANUI. Sept. 3. Showing better cohesion and combination, and maintaining its attacks for longer periods, North Island beat the South Island, 3-2, in the annual minor associations’ hockey match in Wanganui on Saturday. The match was fast and open. Though light rain and wind were experienced throughout, th?. ground, which had been rolled before play, was in good order. There was a sensational start when within 30sec, K. Percy (Wairarapa), the North Island centre-forward, scored a brilliant' goal. Gaining possession just inside the South Island half, Percy beat the opposing halves, fullbacks and goal-keeper. North Island led 1-0 at scored a brillian goal. Gain-half-time. It went into a 2-0 lead during the second half and later led 3-2. South Island attacked in spasms throughout the match, but lacked the necessary finish inside the circle. North Island’s other two goals were scored by the in-side-left, W. L. Brasting (Wanganui), and the left-half R. lorns (Wairarapa).

Brasting’s goal came from a deft flick shot after a melee in front of the goalmouth, while lorns scored from a penalty bully. Scorers for the South Island were the inside-right. P. Strawbridige (Nelson) and the centre-forward, R. Clements (West Coast). A feature of South Island’s play was the solidity of the centre-half and captain, N. Wesnoy (Nelson). The South backs, particularly P. Heal (Nelson), and the goal-keeper, L. Quinton (Nelson), figured in several fine clearances
