Hampshire Wins County Championship

LONDON, September 3. Hampshire won the counts’ cricket championship for the first time in its history when it beat Derbyshire by 140 runs on Friday. The win gave Hampshire 288 points on the championship table and means that it cannot be beaten by Yorkshire, its nearest rival. The nearest Hampshire has come to winning the championship since the club was formed 9® years ago was to finish second to Surrey in 1958. Friday’s Results Results of county matches which ended on Friday were:— At Bournemouth.—Hampshire
306 and eight for 283 declared (R. Marshall 86, P. Sainsbury 73, H. Barnard 61) beat Derbyshire 318 and 111 (R. Taylor 48, D. Shackleton six for 29) by 140 runs. Hampshire 12 points, Derbyshire 4 points. At the Oval.—Glamorgan 279 and one for 126 (E. Lewis 73 not out) beat Surrey 262 and 142 by nine wickets. Glamorgan 14 points. At Bath.—Somerset four for 325 declared and one for 80 beat Kent 208 and 195 (P. Richardson 88; B. Langford five for 65) by nine wickets. Somerset 12 points. Saturday’s Play Close-of-play scores in Saturday’s matches were:— At Scarborough.—Players 367 (N. Nill 44. M. Hallam 97. J. Milner 73, B, Crump 79), v. Gentlemen none for 11. At Lord’s.—Middlesex 222 (R. Gale 58, F. Titmus 40) and three for 59 v. Gloucestershire 100. At Bournemouth.—Yorkshire seven for 288 declared (W. Stott 75, J. Bolus 100) v. Hampshire none for 13. At Blackpool.—Lancashire 254 (G. Pullar 57; D. Baker five for 87) v. Kent one for 54. At Hove.—Worcestershire 278 (D. Richardson 56. R. Headley 75, R. Broadbent 68, N. Thompson five for 70) v. Surrey (J. Parks 51 not but).
