CRICKET 563 Runs Scored In Day At Hastings Festival Match

(N.Z. Press Assn.— Copyright)

HASTINGS, September 3. Runs, 563 of them, came in a-spree at Hastings yesterday on the opening of the Australian team’s first festival match. A. E. R. Gilligan's XI made 360 and the Australians 203 for four wickets in 315 minutes of happy cricket.

The crowd of 6000 on a warm, sunny day on the picturesque ground within sound of the English Channel loved every minute of it.

The highlight for Gilligan’s XI was the century by the 42-year-old former New South Wales batsman, W. Alley, who is having his bestever year. Alley’s 102 was his eleventh century of the season. He now has 2888 runs. He seems certain to join Compton. Edrich, Hutton, and M. Smith, who have scored 3000 runs in a season since the war. Alley today scored runs off the Australian attack as effortlessly as he did in July, when he hit 134 and 95 against them for Somerset at Tauton. He was associated in three quick partnerships. With the Northants opener. Norman, he added 68 in 28 minutes for the third wicket, 65 in 37 minutes with Surrey’s Constable (12> for the fourth wicket, and 75 in 38 minutes with his Somerset team-mate, the West Indian, P. Wight. The Australians’ main interest was in their bowlers,

and whether Simpson and Quick could rfeach 50 wickets for the tour. When the innings ended, Simpson had 49 and Quick 45. When the Australian’s turn to bat came, Simpson and Grout scored 67 for the first wicket in 40 minutes before Grout, after seven boundaries, was eaught and bowled by Lock for 37. Simpson went on to make 62 in 88 minutes with nine boundaries before hitting his wicket. When he left, O’Neill kept the score rolling, and at stumps had made 67 not out in 58 mitiutes, with 10 boundaries. Scores:— GILLIGAN’S XI First Innings R. Subba Row, b Misson .. 0 M.
