SYMPATHY FOR EXPORTERS

“Drowned In 15ft Of Water” (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, August 31. Sympathy for a British exporter “stymied by local Australian suppliers applying for, and obtaining, increased protective duties” was expressed today in a letter to the “Financial Times" by the chairman of the Australian and New Zealand section of the London Chamber of Commerce. The letter, from Mr N. Jones, said: "... I lose no opportunity of pointing out to friends in Australia (and elsewhere) that in many ways ‘imperial preference’ merely means that the foreign exporter to the Dominion is drowned under 30it of water, whereas the English exporter is only drowned in 15ft of water. “At the same time, I think it only right ’to point out that in the year ending June. 1961, Australia imported from the United Kingdom goods to the value of 272 million.”
