A Minuteman missile exploded today as it was being launched for the first time from a 90ft underground silo at Cape Canaveral launching site. A pinwheel of fire spiralled up into the air, and landed a few hundred yards from the launching site. Onlookers said the blazing object looked like the rocket's second and third stages. The explosion was described as one of the most furious ever seen at Cape Canaveral. An Air Force official said the blazing missile had landed in the Minuteman “launch complex.” which included two underground launching silos, two land launching pads, blockhouses and other facilities. No-one was injured. The so-called push-button missile is due to become operational next year. It was designed to be fired in lees than a minute by the mere pushing of a button.
