RIOTING IN ORAN

Five Killed, 30 Injured

Five Moslems were killed and 25 Moslems and five Europeans injured when fresh rioting broke out between Europeans and Moslems in Oran yesterday. Six persons died and 35 were injured in clashes in the city last Monday. Riot police yesterday used tear gas and percussion grenades to break up the demonstrators. They detained 61 persons, seven of whom were armed. The violence came after two funerals —one for Moslems, the other for a European youth, killed in Monday’s intercommunal fighting. Strikes Staged Moslems staged a strike yesterday morning to mark the funeral of the Moslem victims. Europeans launched a counter-strike in the afternoon, which some sources said was at the instigation of the anti-Gaullist underground “secret Army organisation.” European demonstrators massed near a morgue between the European and Moslem quarters, waiting for the body of the European youth. | When the hearse left the morgue, the crowd rushed into the town, where, shops and cinemas had closed, fearing further violence. Crowds of Europeans chased Moslems through the streets Police had to rescue a soldier attacked by rioters, after he had tried to shield a Moslem.
