Trotting WINTER TROT

Ronnieburn Wins Bonniebum, a minor place-getter at each of his last three starts. Justified his favouritism for the Winter Trot Handicap at Waimate on Saturday. This Methven owned and trained Gay Piper gelding took turns at pacemaking and trailing over the last six furlongs of the race. But in the run home he had the others quickly mastered and drew out to win by four lengths. Rolex, which shared the second and third lines mostly, ran the race out solidly for second, two lengths ahead of Company Road. The latter's placing was meritorious from the back mark of 48 yards. He made ground steadily after a good beginning and was equal fourth six furlongs out. Silent Hall was a head back fourth. He had been checked at the start and broke again after two furlongs. A big run around the field carried him into the lead on the home turn but that effort left him without reserve to cope with challenges. Willycan was a close fifth. He was handy on the inner till the straight but could not quicken through a gap which came early in the run home. Idle Jack, which started from the 48-yard mark and was still back near the tail of the field six furlongs out, did best of the others. Vivacis slipped and fell, losing his driver, H. Greenhorn, on the turn out of the straight six furlongs and a half from the finish.
