PUBLIC SPEAKING CONTEST
15 Pupils In City Area Final Fifteen secondary-school onpils will compete in the Royal Overseas League's public speaking contest for tiie Christchurch area. It will be held in Christchurch on July 13. One of the competitors is from Greytnouth Technical High School. The others come from Christchurch schools. The subject of the speech is “a school assembly welcome to a Colombo Plan pupil studying in your sixth form.” It must last for at least five minutes and not longer than seven minutes. The winner of the Christohurch district contest will go to Auckland for the national final to be held on August 30. A book order worth £lO and a miniature cup comprise the first prize for the final contest and the Eden Cup, presented by Sir Anthony Eden, will be held for one year by the winning school. Selected books will be given as second and third prizes. In judging. 40 marks are given for audience reaction, deportment and conviction. 30 marks for humour, clarity, simplicity and originality in presentation, and 30 marks for the adequacy, interest, accuracy and arrangement of material.
