Magistrate's Court SIX WEEKS’ GAOL FOR DISQUALIFIED DRIVER

Six weeks' imprisonment was imposed on Georgt Francis Williams, aged 21 when he was convicted by Mr Raymond Ferner. S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday on a charge of driving while disqualified in Colombo street. Sydenham, on March 15. His disqualification from driving was extended by a year. He was ordered to pay costs on charges of permitting persons to ride in a position liable to cause injury, and having no warrant of fitness. Williams, who was represented by Mr B. J. Drake, pleaded guilty to all charges. Chief Patrol Officer J. Brown said a traffic officer saw Williams's car. drawing a trailer, turn into Colombo street. Two youths were standing crouched on the tow bar of the trailer. The youths jumped off and tried to get into the car, and the driver got out of the car and ran away down the street. Williams was seen next morning, and admitted he was the owner of the car and had been driving it. Chief Patrol Officer Brown said the trailer coupling was faulty, and Williams told the traffic officer his friends were keeping it in place. He admitted having driven the car from Linwood to Sydenham earlier in the evening. He had a previous conviction for driving while disqualified. Mr Drake said Williams now fully realised the consequences of driving while disqualified. BREACH OF PROBATION Barney Matthews, alias Pani Kauhoa, aged 26, a workman, was fined £5 for committing a breach of his probation, by failing to report to the probation officer, on February 17. He pleaded guilty. DANGEROUS DRIVING Evidence that a patrol car followed a motor-cyclist along Hoon Hay road at speeds of 75 to 80 miles an hour on the evening of. May 8, but was unable to overhaul it until the rider slowed down for road works and then crashed while negotiating a narrow gap between a ditch and a parked bulldozer, was given by Traffic Officer W. J. Nostar. The motor-cyclist. lan Roy Thomas, aged 20, a factory hand (Mr B. J. Drake), was charged with driving at a speed which might have been dangerous. He was convicted and fined £l5, and his driving licence was cancelled for one year. He pleaded not guilty. Mr Drake submitted that there had been no evidence of other traffic about which Thomas could have endangered. He denied travelling at anything like the speed alleged by the traffic officer, but would admit travelling up to 50 miles an hour. There were no barricades at the road works and no red lights except for one on a crane. Thomas braked, but was unable to avoid the bulldozer, said Mr Drake.
