Road Safetv

Sir,—lt is an admirable suggestion on the part of the Christchurch Metropolitan Road Safety Committee that a new signal should be introduced, to enable a driver to warn other motorists of danger ahead. In point of fact, as many people in this country probably know, a signal of this kind has been commonly used in England for years: the arm extended with the hand going up and down. It is quite unmistakable, clearly indicating to an oncoming or overtaking driver the need for caution, e.g.. some almost invisible hole or trench in the road Why not adopt this, instead of, as was suggested, leaving the manner of signalling to “the good sense of the motorist.” which might result in all sorts of fanciful and confusing gestures?—Yours, etc.. ILAM. June 30, 1961.
