P. G. Snell’s Busy Day On Saturday

INew Zealand Press Association)

AUCKLAND, May 28.

P. G. Snell did his best during a busy day on Saturday to justify the award to him of the Helms Foundation Trophy as “the outstanding athlete in Australasia for 1960.”

On Saturday morning, Snell ran the 880 yards four times in preparation for his visit to Helsinki, Finland, for the second World Games in July

In the afternoon, he helped the Owairaka Harrier Club to record fastest team time in the Southland Centennial Relay at Avondale racecourse.

Snell still holds the record for the fastest lap. Snell then changed for his third dash of the day to the Auckland Town Hall, in his

Olympic Games uniform, so that he could receive the Helms trophy from the Minister of Internal Affairs <Mr Gotz).

Mr Gotz congratulated Snell on behalf of “the Government, the people, and certainly the athletes of New Zealand.” Snell is the first New Zealander to win the Helms trophy since D. M. Harris, another half-msler, who wonit in 1947. The other New Zealand winners have been J. E. Lovelock. C. H. Matthews. S. A Lay, and Randolph Rose.
