May 27 Kenya police said yesterday they believed nearly MOO Africans bad participated in a mass oath-taking ceremony in the Meru district on the slopes of Mount Kenya. It was said to have been the biggest such ceremony in Kenya's history. A curfew had been imposed' on the area so they could investigate reports of the ceremony, police said. Announcement of the number of tribesmen said to have taken part followed security talks between the Provincial Commissioner for the colony’s Central Province, Mr F. R. Wilson, the Minister for Internal Security and Defence, Mr Anthony Swann* and Legislative Council members from all Central Province constituencies. Mr Wilson said afterwards: “We discussed security in general—not just this mass meeting.”
