Discussion By Caucus
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 18. A Government caucus next week would “more than likely” discuss legislation on capital punishment which it would present to Parliament, the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) said today. Commenting on the death sentence passed yesterday in the Supreme Court on Edward McMillan Sweeney for the murder of Isabella Black Taylor, Mr Holyoake said that before the case went to the Executive Council with which the final decision for reprieve lay, various reports from the trial judge, psychiatrist, medical officers, and other departmental officers skilled in the assessment of men would come before the Cabinet The Cabinet would then consider the reports and make a recommendation to the Governor-General in Council on whether the Royal prerogative of mercy should be exercised.
