Death Duties

Sir. —I must plead guilty to a little envy of people who have enough wealth to get all they want and I may have a small mind, as “Lazarus” says. Socialists, however, are actuated by a motive other than envy. They think that only a fairer distribution of wealth will enable every man to shoulder all his responsibilities. This cannot be done by placing inordinately excessive wealth (much of it unearned' in too few hands. May I say to “Lazarus” that being satisfied with the crumbs that fall from the rich man's table is not the mark of a great and noble mind but rather is as weak and ineffectual as the envy of the small-minded? "Australian's" argument that capital avoids New Zealand is rather belied by the investments of £lOO million to be made by Comalco.—Yours, etc., A. F. PALMER. Waimate, May 16, 1961.
