WATER HEATER CONTROL

Big Saving For M.E.D. Every electricity consumer with a water heater supplied by the Christchurch Municipal Electricity Department had been saved more than £1 in the quarter ended on December 31. 1960, by the ripple control on water heaters, which had kept down the peak load, said the general manager of the department (Mt G H. Battersby). There were about 46.000 consumers with electric water heaters, he said, and in the three months the saving made by ripple control was £ 48.000. Up to December savings effected by ripple control had been sufficient to pay off al! the capital cost of the equipment approximately £3so.ooo—and that had been done in three years, he said From now on the only costs would be operating and maintenance and savings would provide all the capital necessary for new equipment and still leave a large amount. Savings by the use of the equipment had contributed greatly to the department’s ability to reduce electricity charges in the last three years.
