GREYMOUTH HARBOUR
Development Plan Sought
The Minister of Marine (Mr McAlpine) will be asked by the South Island Local Bodies’ Association to consider having the development of the port of Greymouth and the reclamation of lagoons investigated by an independent committee of harbour engineers. The association's executive on Friday took up the case on behalf of the Greymouth Harbour Board. Mr F. G. K. Gilchrist, the secretary, said it had been suggested that Mr J. A. Cashin, the engineer-in-chief of the Lyttelton Harbour Board, and Professor H. J Hopkins, of the Canterbury University School of Engineering, could be approached to make an investigation.
One difficulty in developing the port was that it was heavily subsidised by the Government, which had a great deal of say, Mr Mark Wallace, the president, said.
