NEW ROOM FOR MEN’S HOME

Rotary Members’ Serviee Three trucks of old lawnmowers. jug elements, pieces of derelict motor-cars and a rusty old hay cutting machine, collected by 46 members of the Christchurch South Rotary Club. have been indirectly responsible for a welcome new addition to the facilities of the Salvation Army Men’s Home in Addington—a large and modern smoking and recreation room. As part of their community service project scheme the members of the club decided some weeks ago to undertake a special scrap metal collecting campaign to raise sufficient funds to provide the Addington home with more suitable recreational space. Previously the residents only had use of a much smaller room which was not a part of the main building. Originally used by the men as a library and reading room, the larger room had recently proved too big for its purpose, so the books had been transferred to a more suitable place, said the director of the Salvation Army Men's Service Centre (Brigadier F. W. Hay) yesterday. Working Bees Working in relays of about 12 volunteers each day, the Rotary members had then “got to work.” In three consecutive Saturdays they had completely transformed the dark and unprepossessing old library into a light, spacious hall, the former heavy panelling replaced by a hardwood lining and most of the awkward old fittings removed. At the end of the third Saturday the walls were finished in a bright flame colour, the ceiling in pale blue, the floor lined in grey marled lino and the room fitted with an air conditioning plant suitable for summer and winter. “It was the first time that we had ever done any renovating of this type,” said the president of the club (Mr A. R. Milligan), a Colombo street electrician. "Although the work itself went without a hitch, we were a little disappointed at the response to our scrap metal campaign. We hope that further donations will help to restore the balance of funds used in the renovating work.” N.P.A. Chairman Re-elected <N Z Press Association ) ROTORUA, March 18. Mr P. R.
