Rugby LINCOLN COLLEGE
Wish To Play In Town
When the Ellesmere Rugby Football Subunion meets this evening it will have a motion before it, that the Lincoln College first fifteen be granted dispensation to play in the Christchurch competition. A definite decision on the matter is expected. ‘■This is not the first time the motion has been put to Ellesmere, but the time has surely come for the sub-union to recognise the growing strength of the College Rugby Club which, this year, will have a playing strength of 130 members,” says Mr D. McKinnon, a vice-president of the Lincoln Students’■ Association. “Over the last 10 years, the college has won the senior grade nine times, winning some games by as much as 80 points. Five recent All Blacks and an impressive list of provincial representatives of Canterbury and elsewhere, further indicate the strength which the college has now attained. “Should this motion succeed, the club will still be able to field a team in Ellesmere capable of giving strong competition to other Ellesmere clubs, and may in fact be fielding three teams, apart from the first XV, in the senior competition. “In the last 14 years, Lincoln has beaten Canterbury University more times than it has been beaten, with even better performances against Otago University and Massey College. With seven players who have already gained representative honours, including one All Black, available this year, Lincoln would be a force to reckon with for even the strongest team in Christchurch. “The above are facts which the sub-union must recognise and it is to be hoped that this evening it will grant the dispensation which will enable the host of promising players, who come to Lincoln from all parts of New Zealand. even better prospects of furthering their Rugby careers,” Mr McKinnon says.
