Mr H. J. Simp son Appointed

The designer of the silver kiwis to be presented to Princess Margaret as a wedding present from New Zealand, Mr Harold John Simpson, has been appointed as the first professor of fine arts at the School of Art University of Canterbury. Mr Simpson is at present the senior lecturer in design at the school. Mr Simpson was one of the three judges who selected the winning paintings in the s ’ Ltd -’ art competition. Ten applicants, from New Zealand and Britain, applied for the position. Mr Simpson, who is 38 was born in Edinburgh. He attended the Simon Langton Grammar School. Canterbury, Kent, the Sidney Cooper School of Art, the City of Canterbury Regional College of Art and Crafts and the Brighton Regional College of Arts and Crafts. His qualifications include the Ministry of Education’s national diploma in design in which he took furniture design to an advanced level, and the Ministry of Education's art teachers' diploma Between 1943 and 1949 Mr Simpson served with the Royal Air Force. Mr Simpson has done fulltime lecturing and teaching at the Brighton Regional College of Art, in the teachers’ training department, and the College of Art and Industrial Design at New-castle-on-Tyne. He came to the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, in 1958. Mr Simpson is married with three children. £ 1800 Over Target.— The Hamilton Junior Chamber of Committee campaign to raise money for the Intellectually Handicapped Children’s building fund closed at the week-end with the total in excess of £3BOO.
