BOWLS N.Z. Women’s Tourney: Champion Four Beaten

(New Zealand Press Association)

DUNEDIN, February 9.

The elimination of the present champion, Patea, was one of a series of surprises on the first day of post-section play in the fours championship at the New Zealand women's bowling tournament it Dunedin today. When play concluded the field had been reduced to 16 fours. Greens were again fast, and the weather oppressively warm. There was a sensation in the morning when the Patea four, headed, by Mrs L. Maule, was eliminated by Mrs D. Strang’s Middlemarch four. It was Mrs Maule’s third loSs at the tournament, each of them being to Otago entrants. The Middlemarch four is the only entry from this small country club. Mrs Strang went into a lead ot 7-2 at the fifth end, but Mrs Maule scored a two and a four at successive ends to take the lead. Honours fluctuated until Mrs Strang took a onepoint lead with a three at the fifteenth and followed it with a six at the next. Although Mrs Maule scored at three more ends she was unable to make up the leeway and was beaten 23-19.

There were some thrilling games in the morning, several being decided on the last end.

The Momington four skipped by Mrs A. Cayzor. which was one of only four teams to go through the six rounds of section play unbeaten, was eliminated by Mrs Glue's North-east Valley four. The North-east Valley four left nothing in doubt with a 23-8 win.

A former champion, Mrs M. Nicol (Marewa), had a close

tussle with the Kaikorai four skipped by Mrs D. Wilkinson. Mrs Nicol had a five at the eighteenth which put her in front 17-14, and she won 19-15.
