GERMAN TROOPS
dash Over Training
(Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON. February 9.
The Defence Minister. Mr Harold Watkinson, was asked in the House of Commons last night if he was determined to go down in history as the man who succeeded where Hitler had failed and put German troops on British soil. The question came from a Labour member. Mr Anthony Greenwood, during a heated debate over proposals that German troops be trained in Britain under the auspices of N A T 0., newspapers reported.
Mr Watkinson retorted to Mr Greenwood: “You know that does not represent the view of most people here."
He had said earlier that talks between Britain and West Germany on the storage of training facilities for German troops in Britain would shortly take place
"Until then, we do not know if we can meet the.r needs,” he said.
The Minister claimed public opinion was behind the Government’s policy of closer dealings with West Germany.
