Advertising On Buses
Sir, —Do members of the Christchurch Transport Board really believe that nobody takes any notice of the advertisements on their buses? That is what they imply when they claim that beer and spirit advertisements do not encourage people to drink more. If the advertisers thought the same as the board, there would be no advertisements. Let the
board say courageously that it really does not mind encouraging drunken driving, if it can sell advertising space. After all, it is faced perennially with the job of explaining away a large operating loss, and, quite apart from the welcome revenue from these advertisements, there could be a case for arguing that if the roads are less safe more people will take to a vehicle which can look after itself in a collision. Anyway, many of the casualties are either old people or toddlers who are too young to feel anything much; so what is the board so coy about?—Yours, etc., R.M. February 9, 1961.
