Estuary Bridge

Sir, —Mr Millburn, of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, is reported to have said that a bridge from Sumner to Brighton would be of “little practical value.” About 1902 I heard this project being discussed. I was with a party of schoolboys and university students on a visit to Christchurch from Dunedin when we were taken for a drive in horse-drawn vehicles round the estuary to Sumner, near Cave Rock. One of the Christchurch professors told us that in the near future a survey was to be made for a bridge with floodgates and a lock for small craft, the idea being a road along the coast, the water in the estuary to be kept at a constant level. A comparison was made with with Lake Logan, of Dunedin, once a tidal mass of evilsmelling mud, but later, with floodgates, forming a lake for rowing, sailing, and swimming.—Yours, etc., R. P. HARRIS. Dunedin, February 8, 1961.
