Motor-Racing MONTE CARLO RALLY
8.8. C. Team Out Of Contest (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MONTE CARLO, Jan. 23 A London taxi, driven by a British Broadcasting Corporation team was among the casualties today in the Monte Carlo rally. But a record number of entrants were still in thanks to some of the best weather in rally history, the American Associated Press reported. The taxi, with the British racing ace. Brooks, at the wheel, abandoned its rally attempt in Paris this morning. Brooks said he was having trouble with the brakes. With the long drive to Monte Carlo more than half finished only a handful of the driving teams which started from eight European cities on Saturday had been eliminated. Very few had been penalised. Rally officials said 283 were still in the rally. They predicted that a record number of drivers might reach Monte Carlo tomorrow without penalties—making selection of an over-all winner difficult if not impossible. But with penalty points recorded at secret check stations along the various routes still to be counted, and tough mountain driving in Southern France ahead, the toll could rise sharply tonight The weather forecast was for snow and freezing rain in Central and Southern France, especially in the mountain areas.
