OIL REFINERY SITE
Tests For Air Pollution "The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, Jan. 22. Chemical inspectors of the Health Department are keeping a close watch on Marsden Point, the site of the £2O million oil refinery, for possible air pollution. The Auckland chemical inspector, Mr C. F. Denmead. will visit the site on the Whangarei Harbour this week to put out equipment for measuring hydrogen sulphide, one of the major sources of contamination from refineries “Mr R. T. Douglas, chemical inspector in Wellington, and I visited the site in November with the medical officer of health in Whangarei (Dr. E. R. Dowden),” said Mr Denmead. “While we were there we noticed a smell of hydrogen sulphide, apparently coming from tidal ponds in the area “We are putting out measuring stations now so that we will have an index bf the natural pollution for the next year or two before the refinery is in operation.” Three stations, all within a radius of a mile of the site for the refinery, would be put out, said Dr. Denmead. “Measurements taken now will give us an idea if there is any pollution from the refinery when it begins.”
