2000 Gather At Mr Stillwell’s Home
More than 2000, including many children, accepted Mr R. H. Stillwell’s invitation to see the new year in at his home at 70 Selwyn street on New Year’s Eve.
The gathering packed the front lawn and overflowed on to the street, niey watched open air films and admired the illuminations apd at midnight linked hands and sang “Auld Lang Syne.” New Year greetings on behalf of the city of Christchurch were given by the Deputy Mayor (Mr H. P. Smith). He thanked Mr Stillwell for the evening. For the tenth' and final time, open air films were shown on the front lawn last evening. However. brilliant illuminations which Mr Stillwell has set up on his property, which includes as its centre feature a gaily decorated tree more than 20 feet high hung in bunting, foil, and coloured lights, will remain until next Sunday.
