DUSTIN CUP FINAL

Samoan Society And Monowai •‘The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND. December 30. In a brief but crowded 43 minute* at Blanford Park today Monowai (Canterbury), and Cambridge brought to a climax a week of interesting play in the New Zealand women’s softball tournament and provided what many classed as the best exhibition seen in the Dustin Cup competition for many ye«rs. . Once again the pitcher® featured. C. Robinson (Cambridge) perhap* moved the ball in more than her Monowai opposite, B. Makinson, but she could not match the control of the South Islander, who phlegmatic in even the most testing situation, placed her pitch with meticulous accuracy into the safe hands of the catcher, N Beale. Both sides found the initial step to first base a hazardous one. The surprisingly small total of seven managed it successfully. The low count of hits and errors tells the story of a tight game. Monowai had no errors and two hits to Cambridge’s three errors and one hit. The biggest drive of the game came from Beale, the South Island representative catcher, whose twobagger in the sixth innings brought home B Makinson for the sole home run. Monowai tomorrow afternoon will meet Samoan Society in the playoff for the Dustin Cup. Samoan Society today beat Y.W.C.A. (Lower Hutt), 11-1. Before the game the Samoan Society team presented L. Chiles, the 20-year-old Y.W.C.A. catcher, with an outsize "key of the, door.’’ That was about the last thing Samoan Society gave away for the next hour or so. Big hitting from the Aucklanders harried, but by no means disorganised, the young visitors, and they batted creditably against' the fiery pitching of M. Adsett. Mt. Albert Ramblers unexpectedly ineffectual during the week, salvaged considerable prestige by defeating Cambridge in the late afternoon. Only in the last Innings did the Waikato side slacken and three Ramblers runners came home to give them victory in a good game. 6-5. Results:— Monowai beat Cambridge, 1-0; Samoan Society beat Y.W.C.A., 11-1; Ramblers beat Cambridge. 6-5.
