N.Z. SOUVENIR SALES
Holiday Exemption Wanted "The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON, Dec. 30. Because they feel it is in the public interest that facilities for the purchase of New Zealand souvenirs should be available, several Wellington firms trading in these items are to seek partial exemptions from the provisions of the New Zealand general .shop assistants’ award next month. The firms will apply to the Shops and Offices Exemptions Tribunal for an order permitting them to open their shops, when tourist ships are in port, on days allowed as holidays. The exemption sought does not include Christmas Day, Good Friday, and Anzac Day. It is claimed by the applicants that a substantial portion of their trade is done with tourists and when overseas vessels carrying tourists are in Wellington the country and the applicants lose valuable exchange and sales when ’shops are required to close.
