BYRD STATION TO SOUTH POLE
800-Mile Trek Begins
An 800-mile Antarctic traverse from Byrd station to deliver three tractors to the South Pole began when an expedition of 10 soldiers and two scientists, led by Major A. Havola, of the United States Army, left Byrd station at 7.30 p.m. on Thursday. The journey is expected to take 30 days, and more than 500 miles will be across unexplored Antarctic territory. The three tractors, which weigh 37 tons each, are being taken to the Pole station for use there in the construction of an under-snow camp, in addition to maintaining the air strip.
