HUMANE SOCIETY AWARDS
Rescues At Karitane And Hokianga
A certificate of merit has been awarded to Colin Ellison, aged 13; of Karitane, Otago, by the court of directors of the Royal Humane Society for saving the life of a girl aged 14, who was in danger of drowning. The citation said that two girls were wading across a river at Karitane when they werfe swept of their feet into a hole 25ft deep. One girl, aged 14, who could not swim, was supported by her friend, until she became tired and could not hold her up Colin Ellison dived in and swam 25yds to the girl, and though she -struggled for some time supported her for eight to 10 minutes until a dinghy was launched and the girl was rescued.
For rescuing four men whose fishing launch had been overturned inside the heads of Hokianga harbour, William P. Bryers, aged 33, a fisherman, of Omapere. was awarded a letter of commendation. The citation said that a freak wave overturned the launch and drove it on to the rocks. Bryers launched his 12ft dinghy, equipped with an outboard motor, and took it out about four miles to rescue the men.
