DEMOLITION WORK CANCELLED
Proximity To Sewer
The practical exercise that territorial engineers were to have .in blowing up the foundations of an old building at Bromley today has now been cancelled bv the Christchurch D.ainage Board. It was realised by the board that the foundations are 6ft from the rising main leading to the sewage farm at Bromley. The board told the engineers, from the sth Independent Field Squadron of the Royal New Zealand Engineers, that 401 b of plastic explosive being detonated so c.ose would probably damage the main. The foundations, 2ft thick, were to be removed to make way for a water reticulation system. “The foundations will now be removed with bulldozers and drills next year,” said Lieutenant G. Hardie, one of the officers in charge of the, proposed operation.
