Moncks Bay Road

Sir.—Could the City Engineer (Mr Somers) inform your readers what he is trying to do at the bend of the main highway to Sumner? Over a year ago this job was started and some weeks back a lot of rock was put on the corner and a banked turn made. But why not finish it, as at present it is neither one thing nor another. If they are trying to make a banked speedway bend of it I can see some of the young bloods in their sports cars going so fast that they will finish up in the Estuary at Shag Rock corner. The usual excuse, shortage of labour and material, cannot be given for not completing the jobs.—Yours, etc., S. W. HICKMOTT. November 24, 1960.

[The City Engineer (Mr E. Somers) comments: "The work is being undertaken to eliminate the reverse crossfall on a sharp bend and in future it will be possible to negotiate the corner in safety and comfort. Rock filling on which the road will be built was deposited a year ago to permit settlement in the estuary mud before surfacing was undertaken. Work was resumed a month ago with ancillary items as wall foundation, kerbing, piping stormwater drain, etc., and carriageway surfacing started a week ago.”]
