Swimming Costumes
Sir, —Why can’t sports officials, who give such valued service to sport, show a little more common sense? Here we have an Auckland swimming official banning the swimming trunks worn by Australia’s world champions. He says they’re indecent! What rot! As if anyone is going to be offended in these enlightened days by the sight of God’s finest creation, a finely trained human body, however briefly clad! Can’t these people look beyond their midVictorian rule books? Whatever the rules may say, competitive swimmers overseas have long been allowed to wear the absolute minimum. It probably makes a difference of a second in a hundred yards with reduced drag. Our competitors, like the officials, give much time and effort to their chosen sport. Some of them have spent pounds importing costumes from Australia. Why this officious pin-pricking?—Yours, etc., EX-COMPETITOR. December 6, 1960.
