MOTOR-SCRAPERS FOR MINES

Vehicles Unloaded At Lyttelton

Two heavy motor-scrapers to be used at the open-cast mines at Ohai, Southland, were unloaded from the Port Halifax, at Lyttelton last week. The scrapers will strip the sandstone layers which lie above the coal deposits. In some parts the layers are up to 80 feet deep. Each scraper weighs 32 tohs, is diesel driven and has an engine of 335 horse power in front and another of 218 horsepower, in the rear. Only one driver is needed to operate a machine. The full diameter of the wheels is seven feet and the tubeless tyres each weigh one ton. The motor-scrapers, valued at £46,000 each, were built at Cleveland, Ohio, and can travel at a speed of 28 miles an hour. This week, 14 heav yvehicles are expected at Lyttelton. These include 12 more scrapers, to be used by the Ministry of Works, at Benmore.
