FOOT HAS BIG MAJORITY

By-Election At Ebbw Vale

Mr Michael Foot, the Labour Left-winger, won a sweeping victory over three rivals in a byelection ait Ebbw Vale, Monmouthshire, yesterday to succeed bis friend, the late Aneurin Bevan, as Ebbw Vale’s member of Parliament. In a four-cornered contest, he dropped only a little more than 4000 votes on Mr Bevan’s last majority of 20,922 votes in a straight fight with a Conservative. The result was: Mr. Michael Foot (Labour) 20,528 votes. Sir Brandon Rhys Williams (Conservative) 3799 votes. Mr Patrick Lord Phillips (Liberal) 3449 votes. Mr Emrys Roberts (Welsh Nationalist) 2091 votes. Labour majority—l 6,729 votes. Mr Bevan had a majority of 20,922 votes over his sole opponent —a Conservative—in the General Election.
